Grief Therapy

2/25/2022

Grief therapy can be a lot of things at different moments. Many people talk about the stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. In fact, there’s a whole theory on the stages of grief by psychiatrist Kubler-Ross. She is famous for naming and outlining 5 grief stages.

This theory is great starting place to understanding grief, but it does not capture the multilayered experience of grief and loss
Unfortunately, grief is not neat. It is not clean. It is messy at best. But it is real, and it is a normal part of humxn experience.

The pain from loss is one of those pains in life that we wish we could get rid of. “If it would just go away and leave me alone.” The depression and sadness and rage and anger that sneaks up on us while we are grieving can wreak havoc on our lives and on our relationships.

So what is grief counseling or grief therapy?

In my work with folks experiencing grief, the experience is different for everyone. Everyone has their own experience and timeline. Grief ebbs and flows on its own timeline and my job is to support you through those moments. Grief therapy won’t make the pain go away. There is a reason your loss hurts. Why? Because you loved the hell out of that person! My job is to walk alongside you as you encounter the twists and turns in your journey of grief. Together, we make space for whatever needs to be experienced and whatever needs to be seen. Grief counseling is about balancing remembrance and memories alongside your daily life responsibilities. We work to find ways to help you do what you need to do (e.g. pay the bills and take your kids to school) while honoring the memory of your loved one.
