  • Group therapy offers uniquely, profound benefits. Support groups give us the opportunity to hear other's people's experiences. If you've ever wondered, "Am I the only one? Does this only happen to me?" then you get it. Sometimes it feels good to know we're not the only ones and incredibly validating to know that other people are feeling the same way too.

Group therapy is also a great way to supplement your own individual therapy or get your feet wet to see what therapy can be like.

  • There are different types of group therapy. Traditional group therapy were called, "Process groups." Irvin Yalom did some incredible work to develop this format for therapy. In these groups, there are two facilitators and the group develops and molds its own experience from week to week. This types of group is very open ended and very involved on an interpersonal level with group members interacting with each other.

Our therapy groups at Rooted Acorn Counseling are considered "support groups." These are groups, like the name suggest, that support a group of people through discussing and exploring topics and learning and practicing coping strategies to improve mental health. These groups can have 1 or 2 leaders and often have pre-determined topics and a clear structure for each meeting. RAC support groups are typically 6 to 8 weeks in duration. You meet each week and have a pre-defined topic for each meeting. Typically a meeting will start with a warm-up activity/discussion where each member shares something from their life in general or from the past week. After each member shares, a topic is presented and discussed for the duration of the meeting. At the end, the leader may give you some homework to help you apply the topic/material from the meeting to your daily life.

  • Support groups have a wide range of topics. RAC groups focus on topics relevant to the LGBTQ+ community. Our upcoming support group starting on January 24th, 2023, LGBTQ+ Together, will cover topics focused on connection and resiliency. Here are our tentative topics for each week:

    1. Introductions: We'll introduce ourselves, share a bit about what we hope to gain from the group, and commit to a group culture of confidentiality, safety, and inclusion.

    2. Sh-t! It's 2023, and I'm still recovering from the holidays and 2022!

    3. Showing Up For Self

    4. Break, no group! (Practicing Rest)

    5. Showing Up For Others

    6. Showing Up In Community

    7. Wrapping up... what has this group meant to you? What will you take with you?

  • We ask group participants to commit to each week during the duration of the group. This helps us build a strong core group. It is really difficult when individuals are in and out of meetings and inconsistent. If you feel like you can commit to the 8 weeks, then send us a message to discuss availability. If you have a pre-planned event preventing you from attending one of the dates, feel free to message us to get facilitator approval.

We are committed to making groups a safe and inclusive space and ask each participant to commit to a culture of inclusivity, confidentiality, and safety. In the first meeting, we'll talk about what inclusivity, confidentiality, and safety look like for the group. We're happy to answer any questions you may have prior to the start of the group.

Our upcoming group, LGBTQ+ Together is for individuals 18 years old and older.

  • Group therapy is an affordable way to support your mental health. The standard fee per weekly meeting is $50 per participant. If this is a barrier, let us know! We may have limited spots available for sliding scale.

To register for the group, send us a message. She'll work with you to schedule an initial consult to answer questions you may have about the group and get you registered.

"That ultimately I'm admitting that I'm scared of being alone. But aren't we all? Isn't that... the main thing? Aren't we all secretly terrified that we're not understood, not seen, not loved, not wanted? Okay, great, cleared that up.”
